I believe Abigail Williams is the most to blame for 19 people losing their lives in Salem. Abigail, from the beginning of The Crucible, was the ring leader of lies. She manipulated and threatened those who wanted to tell the truth including Betty Parris, Mary Warren, and John Proctor. "Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you..." (Miller 20). Throughout the play Abigail had many chances to turn back and tell the truth, to save people's lives, but instead she purposely kept the front up to rid herself of people she had a personal hatred for. She even went as far as to harm herself for her scheme. "...She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris's house tonight, and without word nor warnin' she falls to the floor. Like a struck beast, he says, and screamed a scream that a bull would weep to hear. And he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches the flesh of her belly, he draw a needle out..." (Miller 74).
Abigail also fled the town after she knew she was too close to being revealed a fraud. Not even having enough remorse to say sorry or tell the whole truth. "There is news, sir, that the court-the court must reckon with. My niece, sir, my niece-I believe she has vanished" (Miller 126). Although I do not believe that Abigail was insane (she probably just realized at some point that she is just too deep in the lie to turn back now) she did have quite the obsession with John Proctor. But eventually she even turned her back on him and had both the Proctors sent to jail and one of them executed. "Give me a word, John. A soft word. Her concentrated desire destroys his smile" (Miller 22).
Overall, I think Abigail Williams is the most to blame for the deaths in the Salem Witch Trails. She knew how to manipulate and lie and thought it may have lead her away from trouble, it also gave her power that no one should be able to hold over other people. "...I have seen my blood runnin' out! I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people-and this is my reward?" (Miller 108).

Backstabbers
UNBELIEVABLE!!! I knew it, I knew Marry Warren was a sniveling no good coward! I mean, how dare she after all we've been through! We have everyone wrapped around our fingers, we can't go ruining this now. And Danforth! How could such a man ever believe false accusations such as these? For all he knows John's intentions could be much more wild than saving his wife! Thankfully though Mary Warren came to her senses before her time ran out. It was almost amusing to watch her crawl back while whining, "No, I love God; I go your way no more. I love God, I bless God. Abby, Abby, I'll never hurt you more!" (Miller 119). And out of my "infinite charity" I accepted the apology. After all, her cover was most convincing...blaming John Proctor.
Oh poor John...why must he be so foolish? Why does he pretend to love that evil woman? Goody Proctor deserves every ounce of punishment inflicted upon her! But John, oh John...I think he may have went over the deep end and took Reverend Hale with him. It gave me quite the shock when he yelled "...God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!" (Miller 120). And Reverend Hale, though I admit I never liked him, has given up on this court...but wherever he may have fled, I hope God has mercy on his soul.
With luck though, all this nonsense will come to an end. We can be a happy town where no witches dare cast their spirits upon the weak and defenseless. But until then, I will do everything in my power to weed out the Devil worshipers and send them to die at the hands of justice! God's light will shine upon Salem again! "I'll not hang with you! I love God, I love God." (Miller 118).

Witches Get Put In Ditches
Well, this turned out to be easier than I originally thought. After the initial suspicion not much of the blame has been thrown my way. Maybe I should thank Tituba, mentally of course, for tossing out names left and right. It has certainly made me look like the victim...which I am! And to sweeten the deal I saw Marry Warren sowing a poppet today in the court. So I had a thought, tonight at dinner while Reverend Parris wasn't looking I'll prick myself with a needle like Mary Warren was using. They'll never suspect I was the one to do it, witchcraft...that's the answer. And when they ask what happened I'll testify it was Mrs. Proctor's familiar spirit that pushed it in! Sounds perfect doesn't it?
Turned out even better then expected! Cheever and Herrick went out with a warrant to the Proctor farm to take the old crone into custody! I just hope poor John let her go in peace, fighting for that witch will do more harm than good and he knows it! But whatever he believes will be remedied in time, especially when I have him to myself. Now as long as that Marry Warren doesn't get in the way, Mrs. Proctor will be gone and the town can go back to being normal. But I remember Mercy's words of warning "She means to tell, I know it" (Miller 18). And who's to say she's wrong? I have to watch my back, and pray to God with more reverence than ever before. I'll show her for almost ratting us out!

Witches and Warlocks and Lies, Oh My!
I can't believe what this town has become! People going around soiling everyone's good name! Especially my own! Accusing me of being a witch! We never conjured spirits, we only danced and that crazy Barbados lady Tituba made us drink blood and sing! I had no part in any witchcraft! As long as Betty, Mercy, and Marry Warren keep their mouths shut we'll be fine, nothing but a whipping will come out of this. But I have to keep an eye out for that Mary Warren with her idea of "...we've got to tell. Witchery's a hangin' error, a hangin' like they done in Boston two year ago! We must tell the truth, Abby!" (Miller 19). And Betty, the faker, knocked out unconscious only when its convenient for her and no one else! Hasn't anyone have some sense in this town?
Oh but John Proctor, I felt as though I haven't seen him in forever! That Devil wife of his has kept us apart for too long. I know he loves me, he said it himself when I asked him "...tell me you've never looked up at my window?" (Miller 23). I know we'll be together as soon as this whole mess blows over, and that crone of a wife of his out of the way! But did he have to call me a child? Did my John have to insult me so? Gosh silly me, all the pressure everyone is under lately with this talk of witchcraft must be getting to his head, I can't take any of it personally.
Not to mention Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris interrogating me like I had fault in this mess! "What sort of soup was in the kettle, Abigail?" (Miller 42). What should it matter, I never called upon no spirits or no Devil! I have to admit though, I was frightened...but it was all Tituba! Speaking Barbados and other nonsense! Oh I wish Betty would just wake up, help me out of this corner Reverend Hale has me in. But thankfully the Reverend started on Tituba and she ratted out Sarah Good and Goody Osburn. That's when the list of names started to compile. I only pray the light of God will shine upon the people and their wrong doings!
